Don’t look for an equal, look for a complement

Find someone like you One of the most romantic—and most dangerous—ideas we’ve been told is this:“Find someone just like you.” Someone who thinks like you, feels like you, vibrates like you.Someone who shares your codes, your causes, your playlists, your wounds.Someone who “speaks your same language.” And of course, it sounds beautiful. Because sameness feels comfortable. Because in the mirror of what we already know, everything feels safe. But the truth is, most of the time what we’re looking for in “the equal” is not a relationship…it’s self-confirmation. Sameness doesn’t expand you When we look for someone “the same,” we’re often not looking for connection,we’re looking for validation. Validation that my way of thinking is right.Validation that my wound is justified.Validation that I don’t have to change anything. That “equal” then becomes a projection of our insecurities:it doesn’t give us what we truly seek, it only reflects back what we already are. And here’s the trap:we stay in relationships that don’t expand us,they just keep us circling around what we already know. This isn’t about finding the opposite or someone to “complete your gaps.”It’s about learning to tell the difference between non-negotiables and preferences. Non-negotiables are what sustain your integrity. The minimum ground where a relationship can grow without harming you. Respect, honesty, care, freedom. Preferences are the details. That they love your music, that they react the way you would, that they share your exact routines. Nice to have, but they don’t hold a relationship by themselves. When we confuse preferences with non-negotiables, we end up searching for “equals.”And in that search, we miss what really matters: someone who, through their difference, invites us to grow.   Real intimacy is uncomfortable A true complement is not a flattering mirror.It’s someone who, from their uniqueness, opens new doors.Who doesn’t need to confirm your certainties.Who doesn’t echo your fears, but shows you where transformation is still possible. And yes, sometimes that hurts. Because intimacy is uncomfortable.But it’s also the only thing that truly expands. We didn’t come here to replicate ourselves   We weren’t born to endlessly find our reflection.We came to create something bigger than us. You’re probably horrified by that phrase.Your feminism, or at least your idea of independence, might be trembling right now at the thought that in order to receive,you don’t necessarily have to give anything back. Because letting someone in, without digging deep in your emotional pockets to “repay” what you receive, puts you so on edge…that you often prefer to fall for the wrong person. The one who doesn’t give.The one who doesn’t expect.The one who doesn’t connect. Because then, you don’t owe them anything. Debt is not love What we perform from debt never brings anything good.On the contrary, it reproduces the same cycle over and over again: It connects you with emotionally unavailable partners. It traps you in relationships where everything is measured and rationed. It reduces love to transactions and calculations. And the deeper truth is this: your unresolved emotional debts aren’t just “ruining” your relationships…they’re creating them. It’s not really you in the relationship.It’s all that unresolved baggage, speaking on your behalf. You don’t have to be fully healed And don’t get me wrong: this doesn’t mean you need to have your entire life sorted out before you can love.That’s another lie we bought—that “healthy” relationships only happen once we are completely healed. No. What matters is being aware of where your gaps are.So when someone triggers them, instead of falling into the black hole of non-nourishing emotions, you can say:“Look, if you touch this, we might both get lost in a void. Maybe we can redirect this toward a more expansive space where I don’t have to feel so exposed.” Reciprocity is not transaction The success of a relationship has little to do with keeping track of who gives what.It has everything to do with breaking the belief that receiving equals debt. Because there is a vast difference between reciprocity and transaction. El arte olvidado de desear Estamos mucho más entrenadas en ceder que en desear.Sabemos adaptarnos, sostener, responder a lo que otros esperan.Pero cuando se trata de mirar hacia adentro y preguntarnos “¿qué quiero yo?”, muchas veces nos quedamos en blanco. No es casualidad.El deseo es un músculo que rara vez nos enseñaron a usar. El tabú de querer Desde pequeñas aprendemos que desear demasiado es peligroso.Que incomoda.Que puede sonar egoísta o inmaduro. Así, vamos ajustando nuestro apetito vital: Queremos menos de lo que sentimos, para no molestar. Soñamos dentro de lo posible, para no exponernos. Pedimos a medias, para no arriesgarnos al “no”. Y llega un momento en el que confundimos la falta de deseo con paz o con comodidad, cuando en realidad es desconexión. Cómo empezar a descubrirlo No se trata de grandes declaraciones, sino de gestos pequeños.De animarse a escuchar el pulso íntimo que late debajo de la rutina. Algunas llaves para empezar: Practicar el antojo: preguntarte a lo largo del día “¿qué quiero ahora?” aunque sea algo mínimo: elegir la música, el té, la ropa que te da placer. Diferenciar lo que necesito de lo que deseo: porque no siempre coinciden, y a veces en esa diferencia se abre un mapa nuevo. Registrar el cuerpo: el deseo se siente más que se piensa. Preguntale a tu cuerpo qué se enciende con cada elección. Aceptar el conflicto: desear puede chocar con lo aprendido. No significa que estés equivocada, significa que estás viva. No busques un igual, buscá un complemento Una de las ideas más románticas y más peligrosas que se nos metió en la cabeza es esta:“Buscá a alguien igual a vos.” Alguien que piense como vos, que sienta como vos, que vibre como vos.Alguien que entienda tus códigos, que comparta tus causas, tus playlists, tus heridas.Alguien que “hable tu mismo idioma”. Suena hermoso, claro. Porque lo igual da comodidad. Porque en el espejo de lo conocido todo parece seguro.   Pero lo que muchas veces buscamos ahí no es un vínculo…sino una reafirmación de nosotras mismas. Lo igual no expande Cuando buscamos un igual, muchas veces no buscamos conexión real, sino confirmación. Confirmación de que mi forma de pensar es correcta.Confirmación de que mi herida está justificada.Confirmación de que yo no necesito cambiar nada. Ese “igual” se convierte en una proyección de nuestras inseguridades, no nos da lo que verdaderamente necesitamos, sino una ilusión de estabilidad que solo refuerza lo que ya traíamos. Así es que seguimos en vínculos que no nos expanden,sino que nos encierran en un círculo de lo que ya conocemos. No se trata de buscar lo opuesto ni alguien que complete nuestros vacíos.Se trata de aprender a diferenciar entre lo que es un no negociable y lo que es solo una preferencia. Los no negociables son aquello que sostiene tu integridad. Lo que define el terreno mínimo donde un vínculo puede crecer sin dañarte. Respeto, cuidado, honestidad, libertad. Las preferencias son los matices. Que comparta tu gusto musical, que le interese tu misma serie, que reaccione como vos reaccionarías. Son cosas que pueden sumar, pero no sostienen una relación por sí mismas. Cuando confundimos preferencias con no negociables, terminamos buscando “iguales”.Y en esa búsqueda, perdemos de vista lo que realmente importa: alguien que, con sus diferencias, nos invite a crecer. La intimidad real incomoda El complemento no es un espejo complaciente.Es alguien que desde lo distinto abre nuevas puertas.Que no necesita reafirmar tus certezas.Que no replica tus miedos, sino que te muestra dónde todavía podés transformarte. Y claro, a veces duele. Porque la intimidad real incomoda.Pero también expande. No vinimos a replicarnos No vinimos a encontrarnos siempre en lo mismo.Vinimos a crear algo más grande que nosotras. Y para eso, no necesitamos alguien igual.Necesitamos alguien que, desde su singularidad, nos acompañe a reconocernos más allá de nuestras propias seguridades. La mentira de ganarte el amor Imaginá ir a cobrar tu sueldo diciendo:«En realidad no hice lo suficiente este mes para ganármelo, así que mejor pagame menos.» ¿Te pasó alguna vez? Seguro que no. Bueno, espero de corazón que no. Entonces, ¿por qué insistís en empezar relaciones desde la idea de que si el otro tiene algo para darte, automáticamente vos, vas a estar en deuda? La deuda no es amor Sí, ya sé. Te estás horrorizando con esta frase. Todo tu feminismo se está sacudiendo ante la posibilidad de que para recibir, no tengas que poner nada de tu parte.Bueno, tal vez no tu feminismo, pero seguro tu idea de independencia. Porque permitir que otro entre, sin que tengas que escarbar en lo más hondo de tus bolsillos emocionales para ver con qué vas a devolver eso que estás recibiendo, te pone tan en alerta que muchas veces preferís gustarle a la persona equivocada. Que no se entrega.Que no espera nada.Que no conecta. Porque así no le debés nada. Dale, enojate más conmigo, no pasa nada, puedo soportarlo.  Todo lo que performamos desde la deuda no trae jamás nada bueno, al contrario, reproduce una y otra vez la misma dinámica: Te conecta con personas no disponibles emocionalmente. Te enfrenta a vínculos donde hay escasez de entrega, de escucha, de presencia. Te deja atrapada en relaciones que funcionan más como acuerdos contractuales que como espacios de encuentro. Y lo más profundo no es que tus deudas emocionales estén arruinando tus relaciones.Es que están creando tus relaciones. No sos vos la que se vincula.Es todo eso no resuelto, lo que toma la palabra por vos. No necesitás tener todo sanado Y no te confundas, no se trata de tener la vida resuelta ni todo sanado para poder amar.Otra mentira que compramos es que debemos estar listas antes de vincularnos. No. Lo que sí necesitamos es saber dónde están nuestros huecos.Esos puntos ciegos que, cuando alguien toca, nos activan las sombras. Así, en lugar de desbordarnos, podemos decir:«Mirá, si tocás ahí, es probable que terminemos en un agujero negro. Capaz que podemos redirigir esto hacia un espacio más expansivo, donde no me sienta así de expuesta.» Reciprocidad no es transacción El éxito de una buena relación no tiene tanto que ver con dar y recibir en partes iguales.Tiene que ver con dejar de creer que recibir implica una deuda. Porque hay una diferencia enorme entre reciprocidad y transacción. Y el amor, el real, el nutritivo, no se mide en mitades.Se entrega desde la libertad, no desde el control.Desde la presencia, no desde el cálculo. ¿Lista para transformar la deuda en merecimiento? The hidden power of intuition: how your brain knows before you do THE MISTERY OF INTUITION Have you ever had a gut feeling about something—whether it’s a decision, a person, or a situation—only to find out later that you were right? Science suggests that this isn’t just coincidence. Intuition, often thought of as a mystical or irrational process, is actually deeply rooted in neuroscience. Your brain is constantly processing vast amounts of information beneath your conscious awareness, allowing you to «know» things before you can logically explain them.   WHAT IS INTUITION, REALLY? Intuition is often described as the ability to make decisions or judgments without deliberate reasoning. In scientific terms, it’s the brain’s ability to recognize patterns, process past experiences, and integrate sensory information in real-time—all without your rational mind needing to intervene. While it may feel like magic (and to be honest partially is), intuition is a result of complex neural processes. It’s fast, automatic, and largely subconscious, but that doesn’t mean it’s unreliable. In fact, some of the world’s greatest thinkers, leaders, and creatives have credited their biggest breakthroughs to intuition. NEUROSCIENCE BEHIND INTUITION So how does your brain «know» before you do? Recent research in neuroscience reveals that intuition is the result of activity in specific brain regions: 1. The Orbitofrontal Cortex: the brain’s fast-decision maker: The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) plays a crucial role in intuitive thinking. This region rapidly processes emotional and sensory information, helping you evaluate a situation without needing step-by-step analysis. Studies show that the OFC activates even before we consciously recognize a decision, suggesting that the brain «decides» before we are aware of it. 2. The hippocampus: the library of past experiences The hippocampus, responsible for memory, continuously scans past experiences to find patterns that match your current situation. Have you ever met someone and immediately felt like you couldn’t trust them, even without a logical reason? Your hippocampus may have detected subtle similarities between them and someone from your past who wasn’t trustworthy, triggering an intuitive reaction. 3. The gut-brain connection: why you «feel» intuition The gut and brain are intricately connected through the vagus nerve, forming what’s known as the «gut-brain axis.» Your gut microbiome sends signals to your brain that influence mood, cognition, and even decision-making.
